Stanstead Airport.
Ryan Air www.ryanair.com to Pisa or Forli. Daily flights, prices ranging from £15 - £180 rtn. They also now fly to Forli which is just south of Bologna and quite convenient.
British Airways www.ba.com to Bologna. Daily flights, prices from £50 - £200 rtn.

From the US.
There are no direct flights into Florence, Bologna or Pisa from the US, hubs for flight changes are usually Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London or Munich.
Direct flights are available from SFO to Milan.
Direct flights are available from New York to Rome & Milan.

The best way to get from Milan Malpensa airport to the downtown area is by MalpensaExpress Train.
